Congratulations, again, Judi !! This is one of my favorites from your Antietam collection. I distinctly remember that year - my youngest son accompanied me on our photography that night and it was the warmest of all the Memorial Illuminations I've been to.

Wow I did not know about that. Very moving photograph! My dad grew up in Atlanta and would find casings from the Civil War in his backyard.

Artist's Description

Once known as the Sunken Road, it became known as Bloody Lane after nearly 5,000 were killed in this area at the battle of Antietam. Each year, on the first Saturday in December, more than 1,000 volunteers place and light 23,110 luminaries over a large portion of the battlefield, one for each casualty of the battle at Antietam (near Sharpsburg, Maryland) on September 17, 1862. This was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War.

About Judi Quelland

Judi Quelland

I was a professional photographer for more than 35 years. While my vocation included wedding and portrait photography and the restoration of very old (and not so old) images, my avocation goes toward the more creative. These include floral and landscape photography (hopefully with a different perspective), some special events that lend to creative images, and a few things that start as photographs but end as digital art creations. Stay tuned . . . for additional new work!
