Description
This triple arck stone bridge, known as Burnside Bridge, crosses the Antietam Creek on the Antietam Battlefield. Each year, on the first Saturday in December, more than 1,000 volunteers place and light 23,110 luminaries over a large portion of the battlefield, one for each casualty of the battle at Antietam (near Sharpsburg, Maryland) on September 17, 1862. This was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War. The bridge area is normally not a part of the annual memorial illumination. This was a special lighting, just for pictures, for a book that is to be printed about this event.

Marvelous image, Judi. Of all the Civil War battlefields that I’ve been privileged to visit, Antietam remains my favorite. - Mike (V/F)
