Artist's Description
This is the view from the Maryland Monument toward the Mumma Farm ... Smoketown Road is on the left. Each year, on the first Saturday in December, more than 1,000 volunteers place and light 23,110 luminaries over a large portion of the battlefield, one for each casualty of the battle at Antietam (near Sharpsburg, Maryland) on September 17, 1862. This was the single bloodiest day of the Civil War.
About Judi Quelland
I was a professional photographer for more than 35 years. While my vocation included wedding and portrait photography and the restoration of very old (and not so old) images, my avocation goes toward the more creative. These include floral and landscape photography (hopefully with a different perspective), some special events that lend to creative images, and a few things that start as photographs but end as digital art creations. Stay tuned . . . for additional new work!

Judi, it's very moving even in the photo. You are fortunate to be able to photograph this before the rush of visitors. Thanks for sharing.

Judi, it must be amazing to see this sight in person, captured so well here in your photograph. Congratulations on your nice sale! v
Judi Quelland replied:
Cherie ... you're so right! Even after 24 years of being the official photographer I am still humbled by the experience. It's hard to imagine just what 23,110 luminaries looks like. It takes about 45 minutes to drive through so see it all and that's after waiting an average of 2 hours just to enter the battlefield!
